It’s always HOT is Southern California in August so I thought this would be a great image to end the month with. I shot this image down the street from my Los Angeles studio coming back from lunch. There was a car fire down the

street and being that I always have a camera close by I was prepared to capture this image. Titled Smoke Break, I caught these three fireman taking a moment to access the damage. The smoke was beautifully back lit by the sun, which as I always say “Without light there is no beauty.” This image along with many of my other fine art work can be viewed and purchased at purephotocollections.com along with hundreds of other amazing photographers.

I am always looking to find beauty in the unusual. A good photographer can find more than one great image in the same shot. I like to walk around the shot and see what else there is to see. Here is a great example of getting a great image out of a shot that started off just Ok. That is, until I walked around the shot.

Orange County: Big corporate party.

That’s what the caller said. They were looking for a photographer.

Can you send some of your work?

Sure.

Wedding photographer Robert Evans submitted what he had – wedding pictures.

“I had no idea,” he says, of what awaited: Hollywood mansions. Roman castles. A security guard to protect him.

And a $1-million bounty on his photographs!

For 10 years, he’d spent weekends shooting the first dance, the cake, the garter. Eating chicken with the band. Waiting for the bride and groom to climb into the limo.

Life was about to change. Still, even after he was offered the assignment, the whole thing remained cloaked in mystery.

Then he heard a news report about an upcoming event the same time and place.

“I laughed, I cried, I freaked out,” Evans says. “All these emotions spilled out of me at the same time. I’m sitting there in my office, thinking, no way!”

He’d been hired to shoot Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s wedding.

FLOWERS

Why him?

The long answer is hard work, an artist’s eye and a portfolio of unique photos. But the short answer is: flowers!

That’s how Evans found himself in the home of Jennifer Aniston on July 27, 2000 – two days before the wedding – with Brad Pitt bringing him a Coke.

“Here I have Brad Pitt waiting on me,” Evans says, smiling at the memory. “It was very surreal.”

See, over the years, Evans made a habit of shooting wedding floral arrangements and mailing his best shots to the florist. LA Premiere, of Beverly Hills, was so taken with his photos that they recommended him for weddings. Including the Pitt-Aniston wedding.

“I wasn’t given any rules of what I could or couldn’t shoot,” Evans says of the oceanfront wedding that attracted paparazzi from around the world.

He shot extreme close-ups of Pitt working on his vows. Candids of guests Cameron Diaz, Ed Norton and Salma Hayek. He even tossed one camera body 10 feet to an assistant as the couple walked down the aisle to get a shot he needed.

When the party ended, he asked for a security guard to accompany him past the throng of paparazzi.

“I was told the bounty on those wedding photos was $1 million,” he says. “I didn’t want to get run off the road.”

The next day, he delivered 1,200 photos, with negatives, to the bride and groom with everything else shredded.

“Honestly, after Brad and Jen, I thought I will never do another wedding that big again,” he says.

But Evans was just getting started.

ROMAN CASTLE

Jim Carrey. Christina Aguilera. Trent Reznor. Anastacia. Those are just a few celebrities who’ve hired Evans for personal photos.

“I think he’s possibly the best wedding photographer anywhere – and I’ve met quite a few,” says actor Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills 90210) who hired Evans for his May wedding at the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach.

You wouldn’t know it to meet Evans, a low-key husband and father of three.

“I’d see him in the morning – in sweats, a hat, a normal dad – dropping his daughter off at school,” says Joelle Beckett, who met Evans’ wife Amy, through their first-grade children.

“One day at coffee, I asked Amy, ‘What’s your husband do?’” Beckett recalls.

“He’s a photographer.”

“Oh, I know lots of photographers,” Beckett answered. “Maybe I could hook him up. I know people who are wedding photographers!”

For a year, they’d gabbed as their daughters played on swings and became best friends. But this was the first inkling Beckett heard of Evans’ success.

Let’s put it this way:

Fashion magazine Marie Claire named a certain 2006 wedding the 4th most iconic celebrity wedding of all time. Forbes magazine named it the 4th most expensive celebrity wedding of all time.

There was one photographer inside Rome’s Odescalchi Castle that day, when Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes.

And it was Robert Evans.

THE CALL

Which, again, raises the question: Why? This time, the answer is longer.

Evans says two things set photographers apart: Your eye. And your personality.

Your eye is like your fingerprint, he says, because no two photographers see things the same. That can’t be copied.

And personality? Family friend and stockbroker Steve Cobin, 68, of Encino, sums up Evans’ success this way:

“It’s the aura around him. It’s the vibe he gives off. Robbie is a very sweet, good to the core, honest, and in a way naive. He’s vulnerable, but all that sensitivity is what makes him such a wonderful photographer.”

As an example, listen to what Evans recalls about shooting the 4th most fashionable and expensive celebrity wedding of all time.

After shooting Tom Cruise getting dressed and Katie Holmes in makeup. After shooting them kissing from behind the altar. After Andrea Bocelli sang and fireworks exploded and they cut a five-tiered cake with marzipan roses in the 15th Century courtyard. After Evans shot his now-famous “gold wall photo” that beamed across the planet …

He stepped outside at 4:30 a.m. to call his wife. And who should walk out but Tom Cruise!

Hey, would you talk to my wife?

Sure.

“I expected him to say hi to her,” Evans says. “They ended up talking five minutes.”

One of the highlights of our family vacation this summer while in Breckenridge Colorado, was encountering these Mountain Goats while hiking at 11,000 feet. We saw at least 20 Mountain Goats along with 5 or so babies. They seemed to be very friendly or a least they let me get close enough to take these images. The family above paid me to take this family portrait, all be it in goat bucks. I only did it for a few bucks as their horns were a bit sharp!

It was so awesome to just be able to watch them let alone be able to capture these images. Sometimes photography is a little bit luck and a little bit skill, I would say that day LUCK was on my side. I did however head up to this location with my Aunt whom we were visiting, with the intention to photograph them. There was no guarantee that they would be there, but I think this is a classic example of, if you want something bad enough you can effect the outcome. The Desire = The Goal = The Reward

Below is a little information about the goats. How about that, you get to look at cool images and get a little knowledge all at the same time? Don’t you just love the internet?

Robert Evans

Their habitat ranges from the high mountains in the northwestern United States all the way to Alaska. Mountain goats live in places where there is a lot of snowfall. I am surprised that they can survive on the cliffs and in the dangerous weather. They live in some of the world’s most rugged terrain and usually settle close to the timberline, often as high as 8,000 feet above sea level. They usually don’t have much company, since not many animals can survive in the snowy land up in the clouds.

The mountain goats are excellent climbers. Their hooves have soft pads in the middle for traction. The pads are also slightly hollowed and act like a suction cup when they press down. The edges are hard for cutting into rock or ice. Their hooves are also split into two sections, unlike a horse. The two sections can be spread out wide so the mountain goat won’t slip when traveling downhill. Two claws higher up on the foot work like brakes if the goat begins to slide. The mountain goats can run through anything like hard rock, snow, and ice. They are able to perform amazing feats! If they run out of room on a ledge, they can either back up or stand up on their hind legs, turn around and drop back down to all four hooves. They can also jump from one dangerous ledge to another, covering as much as 10 feet in a single bound. If a mountain goat wants to move to a higher ledge, it can leap straight up and hook its front feet over the top of a rock. Using its back legs, it then pulls itself up over the ridge to the top.

It is very hard to sneak up on mountain goats. They have very good eyes and can see movement up to a mile away! They also have a keen sense of smell and can detect enemies long before there is any danger. Even if they don’t smell danger, their excellent hearing will warn them of enemies coming.

Mountain goats are safe from most predators high in the mountains. Sometimes a golden eagle might get a young baby, but only the cougar and the lynx are surefooted enough to be dangerous in the high altitudes. If attacked they fight very well with their razor-sharp horns. Rock slides and avalanches are much more dangerous to mountain goats than predators.

The mountain goats are about 36-48 inches from shoulders to hooves. Billies can weigh up to 250 pounds or more. Nannies are much lighter and smaller.

Both sexes have black horns, but you can tell the difference between nannies and billies because the billies’ horns are curved and the nannies’ are more straight, with a sharp curve at the tips. They never lose their horns, they just grow a little longer each year.

Their fur is yellowish-white that covers the body. They also have a little tuft of fur under their chins. Mountain goats are well dressed for life in the mountains. They wear a heavy, whit fleecy coat which keeps them snug and warm in cold weather. The shaggy outer layer is made up of guard hairs that may be up to 5-6 inches long that shed both water and snow. Underneath are about 3-4 inches of very fine wool. The undercoat helps to keep their valuable body heat from escaping.

Because their front legs are short compared to the back legs, they walk very stiffly, appearing to strut around.

The Indians of the northwest once used the wooly undercoat of the mountain goat for making beautiful, lightweight, and warm Chilkat blankets.

Mountain goats eat any exposed vegetation in the high mountains. Most of their food consists of grasses, sedges, and rushes. They also love salt and often snack on a special type of clay found high in the mountains. They are herbivorous ruminants, or cud chewing animals. This means that they first gulp down their food while foraging and store it for later when they can relax and eat. They have two parts to their stomachs, one for storing food which is later brought back up to the mouth for chewing, another part for digesting food. Stored food is regurgitated back up to the mouth for chewing and is then swallowed into the part of their stomach used for digesting. Mountain goats are sturdy creatures and can find plenty to eat where cows would starve. You can tell how good their diet is by the size of the rings on their horns. Narrow growth rings mean they didn’t have much food. If you count the rings on their horns, you can tell the number of winters the goat has lived. The average mountain goat lives about ten rings.

Nannies are the bosses in mountain goat society except in mating season. Billies live alone or in small groups during the summer, joining up with the nannies and kids in the fall, when mating season begins. When mating starts the males start fighting over whose nannie is whose. If one of them doesn’t back down, they may fight, using their horns as daggers. Usually the fights are short, but sometimes there are serious injuries.

They don’t travel very far in the winter, usually no more than a range of 5 miles. When spring arrives, it is time for the mountain goat to begin to shed it’s heavy winter coat. Large patches of their fleece are shed and catch on rocks and bushes. While they are shedding, they look very scraggly, with clumps of wool hanging from their bodies. Before too long, a new lightweight summer coat grows in and thickens in through the fall. New guard hairs grow and a new thick undercoat develops in time for the cold winter.

Nannies’ give birth in late spring, finding a cave or grassy ledge on a cliff. They usually have only one baby, but sometimes have twins, and very rarely have triplets.

The babies have two black leathery spots on their head where horns will grow. A few minutes after being born, the kid stands up and begins to feed on its mother’s milk. The kids are usually about 13 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh about 7 pounds. In less than 1 hour the kid is hopping on its own legs.

The young mountain goat follows its mother really closely. Nannies stay very close to their young kids. If any animal tries to get the kid it has to get past the mom first. After a few days, they join the band of other nannies and their young.

The young mountain goats start nibbling on plants when they are one week old but they will keep drinking their mother’s milk for another five weeks or so. By winter they weigh about 22 pounds. They stay with their mother through the winter, but when spring comes the nannies send them off on their own before the new kids are born. Most of the kids stay with the band for at least another year before going out on their own.

I am excited to share some of my favorite images from Ian Ziering and Erin Ludwig’s Orange County wedding. The wedding took place Friday May 28th, 2010 at the elegant Pelican Hill Resort on the Newport Coast in beautiful sunny Southern California. I want to thank Ian & Erin Ziering who have allowed me to share some of their images. This rare look inside a celebrity wedding is exciting for me to share with you because the images here on my blog are some of my favorites from their wedding day. My images were published in People, Us Weekly, and In Touch magazines, dated the June 14th 2010. Although the magazine images are great, the images the magazines pick are, in my opinion, not always the ones that have the most impact, emotion or artistic flair. Those are the images I strive for, images that tell a story or capture a moment or just make you say wow! I see moments that move me and I capture them with my camera to hopefully move the viewer and bring you the viewer right to the feeling or emotion of the moment or otherwise provoke thoughts of inspiration. My goal is to move people’s hearts through my photography.

One a side note I recently did a very exhilarating project called Romancing the Storm, where we set out to photograph a bride & groom in front of a tornado. After you view Ian & Erin’s wedding pictures click the link and watch the trailer. We filmed the whole week of tornado chasing and it’s really worth seeing.

A big thank you to the Bridal Bar and Harmony Walton for the referral.
Erin looked stunning in her custom Ines Di Santo gown from Jobyna’s Bridal, accessorized with a Maria Elena jeweled headpiece, drop earrings and a bracelet to match. Her lavish bouquet, created by Sada’s flowers, was full of fuchsia peonies & rich pink roses.
