Orange County: Big corporate party.

That’s what the caller said. They were looking for a photographer.

Can you send some of your work?

Sure.

Wedding photographer Robert Evans submitted what he had – wedding pictures.

“I had no idea,” he says, of what awaited: Hollywood mansions. Roman castles. A security guard to protect him.

And a $1-million bounty on his photographs!

For 10 years, he’d spent weekends shooting the first dance, the cake, the garter. Eating chicken with the band. Waiting for the bride and groom to climb into the limo.

Life was about to change. Still, even after he was offered the assignment, the whole thing remained cloaked in mystery.

Then he heard a news report about an upcoming event the same time and place.

“I laughed, I cried, I freaked out,” Evans says. “All these emotions spilled out of me at the same time. I’m sitting there in my office, thinking, no way!”

He’d been hired to shoot Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s wedding.

Why him?

The long answer is hard work, an artist’s eye and a portfolio of unique photos. But the short answer is: flowers!

That’s how Evans found himself in the home of Jennifer Aniston on July 27, 2000 – two days before the wedding – with Brad Pitt bringing him a Coke.

“Here I have Brad Pitt waiting on me,” Evans says, smiling at the memory. “It was very surreal.”

See, over the years, Evans made a habit of shooting wedding floral arrangements and mailing his best shots to the florist. LA Premiere, of Beverly Hills, was so taken with his photos that they recommended him for weddings. Including the Pitt-Aniston wedding.

“I wasn’t given any rules of what I could or couldn’t shoot,” Evans says of the oceanfront wedding that attracted paparazzi from around the world.

He shot extreme close-ups of Pitt working on his vows. Candids of guests Cameron Diaz, Ed Norton and Salma Hayek. He even tossed one camera body 10 feet to an assistant as the couple walked down the aisle to get a shot he needed.

When the party ended, he asked for a security guard to accompany him past the throng of paparazzi.

“I was told the bounty on those wedding photos was $1 million,” he says. “I didn’t want to get run off the road.”

The next day, he delivered 1,200 photos, with negatives, to the bride and groom with everything else shredded.

“Honestly, after Brad and Jen, I thought I will never do another wedding that big again,” he says.

But Evans was just getting started.

ROMAN CASTLE

Jim Carrey. Christina Aguilera. Trent Reznor. Anastacia. Those are just a few celebrities who’ve hired Evans for personal photos.

“I think he’s possibly the best wedding photographer anywhere – and I’ve met quite a few,” says actor Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills 90210) who hired Evans for his May wedding at the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach.

You wouldn’t know it to meet Evans, a low-key husband and father of three.

“I’d see him in the morning – in sweats, a hat, a normal dad – dropping his daughter off at school,” says Joelle Beckett, who met Evans’ wife Amy, through their first-grade children.

“One day at coffee, I asked Amy, ‘What’s your husband do?’” Beckett recalls.

“He’s a photographer.”

“Oh, I know lots of photographers,” Beckett answered. “Maybe I could hook him up. I know people who are wedding photographers!”

For a year, they’d gabbed as their daughters played on swings and became best friends. But this was the first inkling Beckett heard of Evans’ success.

Let’s put it this way:

Fashion magazine Marie Claire named a certain 2006 wedding the 4th most iconic celebrity wedding of all time. Forbes magazine named it the 4th most expensive celebrity wedding of all time.

There was one photographer inside Rome’s Odescalchi Castle that day, when Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes.

And it was Robert Evans.

THE CALL

Which, again, raises the question: Why? This time, the answer is longer.

Evans says two things set photographers apart: Your eye. And your personality.

Your eye is like your fingerprint, he says, because no two photographers see things the same. That can’t be copied.

And personality? Family friend and stockbroker Steve Cobin, 68, of Encino, sums up Evans’ success this way:

“It’s the aura around him. It’s the vibe he gives off. Robbie is a very sweet, good to the core, honest, and in a way naive. He’s vulnerable, but all that sensitivity is what makes him such a wonderful photographer.”

As an example, listen to what Evans recalls about shooting the 4th most fashionable and expensive celebrity wedding of all time.

After shooting Tom Cruise getting dressed and Katie Holmes in makeup. After shooting them kissing from behind the altar. After Andrea Bocelli sang and fireworks exploded and they cut a five-tiered cake with marzipan roses in the 15th Century courtyard. After Evans shot his now-famous “gold wall photo” that beamed across the planet …

He stepped outside at 4:30 a.m. to call his wife. And who should walk out but Tom Cruise!

Hey, would you talk to my wife?

Sure.

“I expected him to say hi to her,” Evans says. “They ended up talking five minutes.”

For the second year in a row I was honored to be asked by Us Weekly Magazine and WeddingChannel.com to photograph the Dream Wedding. The newlyweds Van Ngo and Eric Oberly A Washington, D.C.-based couple won a $100,000 day to remember on Sept. 27, 2009. Their wedding took place at the Ronald Regan building in Washington DC. Van made her beautiful Vera Wang gown look stunning.   (See images from the wedding on Us Weekly.com)

I had a great time while I was in DC. I had a little time to be a tourist so I walked down to the White House and had tea with The First Lady. Mr. O    was away running the country and could not join us. We had a nice visit but I needed to get to rehearsal at the Ronald Regan building where the lucky couple’s nuptials would take place the next day. After the walk through we headed off to dinner and drinks with the ladies from Weddingchannel.com and Us Weekly Magazine. We had great conversation but need to get some sleep as it was going to be a long wedding day. Before bed I was excited to take a spin in the massage chair that was in my room. Let me tell you it was worth the price of admission, WOW amazing. This chair rocked, it had so many different things it did I thought I died and gone to heaven. I woke up at 3:30 am wondering where I was and what had happened. What happen was, I feel asleep in the darn thing, that’s how great it felt. Next time you are in DC make sure to stay at the  Loews Madison Hotel not only for the massage chairs but the beds we super comfortable and the food was great too.

The two days prior to the wedding it had been raining in Washington DC but on the day of the wedding the sky had cleared and it was beautiful. We had fours hours and a bus limo to drive us around and utilize some of the historic locations around DC. We shot at the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument then headed to the Ronald Regan Building for more pictures with the couple and their families.

The room where the ceremony and reception were held was just stunning, with a dome ceiling it felt like we were in the Capitol. The decor was amazing, flowers to linens Janet Flowers outdid herself.

The band, The Source from Elan Artists had the floor hopping, even grandma couldn’t resist, the dance floor was packed all night.

I especially want to thank David Wittig and Sarah E. Carter who both flew in to shoot with me. David from Chicago and Sarah from Indianapolis. Love Indy… (I am a bit Hoosier myself, although I was born a raised in Los Angeles, I spent my summers in Indiana with my grandparents who lived on a lake, from age five to age seventeen.)

Also a big shout out to Nicole Wolf who met us for drinks on Friday night when I arrived. I loved hanging out with Nicole she even took us to a DC party where her friends band was playing in the Basement. Loved getting the real (underground) DC experience, thanks Nichole.  Prior to Drinks with Nicole I had a great meal with my cousin Katie who I haven’t seen for two years. She is a graphic designer and recently moved to the Baltimore area, she woman-ed up a came to the party as well even though she had an hour drive home. Atta-Girl!

It was a great bunch of people who came together to make this wedding happen. Thank you everyone it was great working together with you.

I just picked up the Latest issue of In Touch Weekly and was honored and humbled to see my face in an article about Celebrity Wedding Photographers, referring to when I photographed the wedding of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, July 29th 2000. I was featured with one of the best in the business, Joe Buissink. He is an amazing photographer and a great person, I feel honored to be included among his company.
