So I Tivo’d (I love how Tivo’d is now a verb in our vocabulary) Jimmy Fallon the other night because one of my favorite country singes Blake Shelton was a guest on his show. I have never had a favorite country singer ever, but since I was asked to photograph his wedding I have become a Blake Shelton Fan. I really do like him as he is funny as sh*t and really that’s why I wanted to tune in cause I wanted to good laugh.

So anyway, as I was watching to my surprise Jimmy busted out a picture that I had taken from Blake & Miranda’s Wedding. Kinda funny to see your work on a late night talk show, but never the less very cool! The clip is funny so I thought I would share.

As I always do, I have a camera with me, July 4th is no exception. Went to our local park to watch the firework show and on this eve there was a little moon showing her young face in the night sky.  The park was very crowed but I managed to squeeze my way into a position where I could capture both the moon and the colorful awe of the show. I hope you like….. Maybe not the best firework images ever shot, but never the less unique.

I recently finished directing and shooting my first music video “Shandaliqua” by Hans Eberbach off of his new solo album “Up is The Only Way Out”. (available on iTunes) Hans has an amazing voice and sounds a little bit like Ben Harper and Martin Sexton, in my laymen’s opinion, and is the former front man of the band Sweet Vine.

The story told in the video is about a young girl who is struggling to make ends meet. She has a dual life and is fighting to make something of herself, a subject matter that probably hits home for a lot of young women today. I wanted to show that anything is possible if we work hard enough. We are all capable of changing our situations; we do not have to be victims of our circumstances if we fight and work hard. We are all capable of turning poison into medicine. If we do not give up, we can accomplish anything. As Ghandi once said, “Become the change you wish to see.” Of course there is a photographer in my video, who is intrigued by Shandi and helps to facilitate her rise from desperation to dignity.

Shooting this music video was such a great experience for me. Shooting video is not that much different from shooting stills. It’s photography that moves, as opposed to capturing still moments one-at-time. You still have to expose it properly, light it, and tell a story with your captures.  I did find telling a story in 3:20 in the case of “Shandaliqua” to be a bit of a challenge. I knew my biggest problem while we were shooting was going to be that the song wasn’t long enough, because the footage I was getting was just incredible.  I joked with Hans and told him he was going to have to write a new verse to the song so I had more time.

I started shooting video as soon as Canon released the 5D Mark II about three years ago and quickly started singing the praises of video myself. Today, I enjoy sharing my knowledge though my workshops and speaking engagements with my fellow photographers who are also interested in what opportunities video can bring. Video has opened up a whole new creative flow for me. I am am so appreciative everyday that I get to create imagery as a visual artist.

Everything was shot on location April 17th – 19th 20011, in Sacramento where you can find Hans Eberbach singing at some of Sacramento’s hottest night spots.  Hans also fronts a great funk, get up and dance your ass off band, called the Nibblers who are also taking Sacramento by storm. The Nibblers have been in the studio recording an album which is due for release Memorial day weekend 2011.

I learned a lot shooting and directing Shandaliqua and look forward to taking that knowledge into the future as I continue to shoot, produce and direct more projects in the coming months and years. I already have a few fun things lined up and can’t wait to sing my own two syllable song, ”ACTION!”.  I have always had a dream tucked away in the back of my head to win an Academy Award someday. I have to say now that I have made this leap, it doesn’t seem as far away as it once did.  I am a firm believer that you can do anything you want in life, you just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep taking steps towards your goals. One day you might look down and see yellow bricks below your feet.

By the 550 friends and family in attendance, one can deduce how many hearts these two have touched. I too was treated like part of their family.

People often ask me what was it like to shoot a celebrity wedding as if it should be different than photographing ” Normal People” Answer: there is no difference. What makes for great wedding pictures for me is the personal connection I have with my bride and groom and the time to create photographic magic. From the first moment I meet each of them I was touched by their big hearts and contagious personalities, which made the privilege of photographing their wedding an absolute joy, not a job.

Blake & Miranda’s wedding images will be published in Us Weekly magazine coming later this week. I have to say that Miranda & Blake’s wedding images are really beautiful. One big reason they have great wedding photographs besides their genuine down to earth personalities which made my time behind my camera easy, was the fact that they cared more about great wedding photography, then old traditions. They took my advice and saw each other before the wedding and took all their photos before their nuptials, so after they said “I DO” and walked down the aisle, they could go do whatever they wanted, instead of spending time taking photographs. Spending time alone or spending more time with your guests is a smarter choice, especially when your normal human reaction after you kiss and travel down the aisle is “Let’s go party and be with our friends and family” A wedding is a celebration and when the months of planning are over, It’s time to PLAY!

You have to allow some time to capture great wedding photographs, they don’t just happen. I often ask photographers when I speak or during my workshops, Do you shoot what you want or do you shoot what you get? Do you actually have fun photographing the wedding the day? I like to allow up to three hours to “PLAY” on the wedding day, prior to the ceremony. I let my couples see each other for the first time privately, and I photograph their reactions from a distance, respecting their privacy, while capturing some of the most amazing emotion filled imagery of the day. The next few hours, are spent photographing family and bridal party, while also allowing time for things to maybe run behind, and finishing at least 30 minutes prior to ceremony to give my couples time to refresh and relax, before the start of their ceremony.

If photography is your priority, allow some time to create and to play. Make sure you love not just like your couples and the same goes from the bride and groom, personality and experience are key to great wedding photography.

As soon as the images have been release to the public in US Weekly and other media outlets, I will show more great moments from Blake & Miranda’s wedding here on my blog. There were tons of great moments and unique things from Blake & Miranda’s wedding and of course great music, and musical performances. If you love country music this was a once in a lifetime moment. Of course, I am not a liberty to divulge details here on my blog but I will share some images right here in a week or so, until then, go pick up a copy of Us Weekly Magazine which should hits the news stands on Thursday May 19th 2011.

One of the great joys of my job is getting to watch my clients families grow. Photographing maternity and baby portraits was a natural transition

after photographing a couples wedding.  I started off shooting most of my baby maternity in  studio on a black background which produced some great images over the years.

After a while I wanted to expand my creativity to I started doing my maternity and baby sessions in the homes of my clients and really love the results.

The client is usually more comfortable and has their whole closet at their disposal which makes choosing clothing options great.

This Client used to be a model so she made a beautiful pregnant mommy to be. I picked locations around the house that my eye gravitated towards to capture these images.

I did bring the black background with me at the clients request and as you can see captured a great image using the cool chair they had in their home.

I loved the modern design of their house and since it was a cold rainy day the fireplace was going and taking the chill out of the air and adding the comforting smell of wood burning in a fireplace.

Another thing I found beneficial to working in the home was the ability to change the wardrobe as we change locations. Here my subject change into a bathing suit bottom that matched the color of our background and that minimized the amount of material covering her skin. My preference was to have her hips nude but since I always want my subjects to be as comfortable possible I always default to their comfort level. I was happy and she was happy with the bating suit option so having all her clothing right there was a win win for both of us.

I am excited to share some of my favorite images from Ian Ziering and Erin Ludwig’s Orange County wedding. The wedding took place Friday May 28th, 2010 at the elegant Pelican Hill Resort on the Newport Coast in beautiful sunny Southern California.  I want to thank Ian & Erin Ziering who have allowed me to share some of their images. This rare look inside a celebrity wedding is exciting for me to share with you because the images here on my blog are some of my favorites from their wedding day. My images were published in People, Us Weekly, and In Touch magazines, dated the June 14th 2010. Although the magazine images are great, the images the magazines pick are, in my opinion, not always the ones that have the most impact, emotion or artistic flair. Those are the images I strive for, images that tell a story or capture a moment or just make you say wow! I see moments that move me and I capture them with my camera to hopefully move the viewer and bring you the viewer right to the feeling or emotion of the moment or otherwise provoke thoughts of inspiration. My goal is to move people’s hearts through my photography.

One a side note I recently did a very exhilarating project called Romancing the Storm, where we set out to photograph a bride & groom in front of a tornado.  After you view Ian & Erin’s wedding pictures click the link and watch the trailer. We filmed the whole week of  tornado chasing and it’s really worth seeing.

Ian & Erin were more than a pleasure to photograph; they are real people with big hearts and lots of love to give.  I felt more like part of the family than I did the photographer. Erin looked stunning in her custom Ines Di Santo gown from Jobyna’s Bridal, accessorized with a Maria Elena jeweled headpiece, drop earrings and a bracelet to match. Her lavish bouquet, created by Sada’s flowers, was full of fuchsia peonies & rich pink roses.

When a couple sees each other for the first time on their wedding day, it almost always is one of my favorite moments on the of day. Ian’s reaction when he saw Erin has to be right up there in my top five best of all time that I have witnessed over my last twenty-one years photographing weddings.

As guests arrived at the Pelican Hill Resort, they were greeted in the cocktail terrace overlooking the ceremony.

Below the cocktail lounge, a breezy chuppah graced the alter for the Jewish ceremony overlooking the Pacific Ocean. After what seemed to be a perfect ceremony with beautiful weather and a string octet, the guests mingled in the cocktail lounge before proceeding into the grand ballroom.

An array of wedding photos was displayed in individual frames celebrating the marriages of those in attendance.

First Dance

A very colorful & elegant ballroom awaited the crowd, with cascading centerpieces and soft pink and purple lighting effects. The guests were entertained throughout the evening with live music from the highly acclaimed Cowling Band. The much anticipated dessert was raised on a platform surrounded by a lounge area.

Toast

A variety of cupcakes by Vanilla Bake Shop were stacked in layers, creating the shape of a four-tiered cake. Atop the final layer, a romantic cake topper hand-painted by the bride gave the cupcake tower the finishing touch.

The bride & groom as well as the guests enjoyed a keepsake from the Foto Cabina photo booth.

This was my first time photographing a wedding at The Resort at Pelican Hill, and I have to say what a classy place. Not only is it a spectacular location for a wedding ceremony, but the service and staff are amazing. I had a few special requests which were granted without question. I myself am headed back soon to enjoy the amazing spa, which I took time to tour while I was on the property.

It was an absolute joy to photograph Ian and Erin’s wedding nuptials. It was very apparent that Ian is totally in love with Erin, all day long he would say ” I am the luckiest guy in the world” or “Honey, you are not fair to all other brides, you are gorgeous!”

When they saw each other for the first time it was a photographer’s dream, with so much emotion you just couldn’t take a bad picture. Ian was blown away when he laid eyes on Erin – tears, laughter, smiles and all recorded through the lens of my camera.

The whole day was just magical. I cannot wait to share some of  the images with you here on the blog. You will have to wait a few weeks before I can do that so I can honor my agreement with Getty Images who I worked with for the second time now on a wedding.  Please come back on June 15th to view exclusive images from Ian & Erin’s wedding.

Photographing any wedding, let alone a celebrity wedding, is an awesome privilege.  I appreciate each wedding I get to photograph and feel so fortunate to do what I love as a career. Capturing great images is not solely the photographer’s job.  The bride and groom’s attitude and ability to show and feel emotion makes a huge impact on their wedding pictures at the end of the day. Ian and Erin Ziering’s wedding pictures are awesome because they lived every moment and freely expressed real emotion throughout their entire wedding day.

As I mentioned above, Ian keep telling Erin how lucky he was all day long and I think Erin is just as fortunate to have Ian as her husband and best friend. As I witnessed all day long, Erin has found a man who would do anything for her and loves her with all of his heart and is not afraid to show it. Their images reflect their love for one another. I can wait to share with you some of the great images I was fortunate to capture that day. I know he made me think about how I can be a better and husband and friend to my wife, something we all need to strive for everyday.

Right away I new it was going to be a great day because you just can’t do any wrong when pointing the camera at either one of these two lookers.

Aimee was just a stunning bride and Troy looked dapper in his Grey suit.

Golf Course, beyond the beautiful course, was the wedding location- on the green situated next to an old-fashioned great big red barn.  The amply-sized, modern,  yet not-of-this-century, barn was a wonderfully charming place for the reception.  It made a poetic backdrop for wedding photography. We took pictures inside and outside;  as a matter of fact we used all sides of that barn.

Troy and Aimee incorporated some very unique things into their wedding which I think made the day very special.

One of the first unique things I noticed were all the bridesmaids each had on pretty different hats that matched their elegant black dresses accented with yellow in the bodice.  As well, each girl held pots of yellow flowers as opposed to bouquets of flowers, which helped to set off the yellow in their dresses.

The guys looked sharp in their grey suits and vests which complimented the ladies’ dresses nicely.

The bride and groom saw each other prior to the

ceremony which allowed us three hours to have fun and play with the photography.  I highly recommend this to

anyone who might be on the fence about seeing one another and taking photos before your ceremony.  If you want to have great wedding pictures and a relaxed fun environment, do all your photographs before the wedding, then you can say ” I DO”, kiss, head down the aisle and be a part of your own cocktail hour instead of taking pictures and missing out on that extra hour to spend time with all those family and friends who came to spend time with you on your special day.
